Default Greeting and Salutation

Hi,Sir
Could you pls tell me the difference between "greeting" and "Salitation"?

When should we use "Greeting" and when we should use "Salutation"?

Or there is no difference between them?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there

Salutations and greetings are polite ways of saying hello and can be used to begin a message or letter. Both indicate a gesture of welcome and
can also be used to express goodwill to another. I feel that salutations is a more formal expression than greetings.

Other less formal words that we use to begin emails/letters etc are : hi, hello.

Hope this helps!

They mean the same.

Salutations is not much used in general correspondence or conversation. It is usually used in an ironic or facetious way.

Greetings is more acceptable.

In what context did you want to use them?
