Hi,

When a makes a sound like 'grrrrr....' can I say "He is roaring"? Or is this verb used only for lions? What's the appropriate verb for dogs?

"grrrrr" this is called "growling". To growl.

roar can be used for any deep soud either produced by humans or animals. we can also use it for things that have rumbling sounds;for example
the wind was roaring outside. the train roared from a distant. the most appropriate verb for dogs normal sound is "bark"

In order to complete the answer I was digging in my dictionaries and found this

Dogs usually bark.

Small dogs, pets and similar yap.

Wolves bay but usually at winter or just before the winter (with open mouths? up to the sky)

Before to bit into a leg, just to warn someone to stop walking, showing their theets usually in anger, dogs do low rough sound what is called growling.

I think lions do roaring but not dogs. (they would be lions then or simiar animals)
My advanced in years Orion do roaring with its wide open throtlle.

Dogs usually do woof, woof, woof, ....

It depends on the region where you live. My dog is doing 'woaf woaf...' Different accent
