'go on' and 'continue'

I have several questions about the usage of go on and continue.

1. I saw the following sentence in a dictionary:
He paused to take a sip of water, and then went on with his story.

1.1. Can I say he paused to take a sip of water, and then went on with telling his story? Can I use go on with doing sth?

1.2. Can I say he paused to take a sip of water, and then went on telling his story? Can I use go on doing sth to describe a action after a break?


2. Is 'continue to do sth' the same as 'continue doing sth'?
