Exclamation Urgent question about Reported Speech

My language teacher told us that we should not change "this" and "these" to "the" in using reported speech, only change "this" to "that" and "these" to "those".
But another teacher told us, no matter the direct speech use "this" , "that" , "these" or "those", we can change it to "the" when using reported speech.

I want to know, which method is correct and why, thanks

Default Re: Urgent question about Reported Speech

I guess it could depend on the context. It works here, though:

Max: "Could you give me this book, please?"
Sam: "What did Max say?"
Pat: "Max asked you if you could give him this/that/the book."
