This line from the book War and Peace captures our imagine of those who are in the grip of an addiction: "Then, as happens to people with no strength of character, such a passionate desire came over him for one last taste of the familiar dissipation that he decided to go."

For years I thought of addicts that way, as those who are weak and lack will power, those with no strength of character.
