| | well into the triple digits Hi, everyone. I have a question. And the heat waves so intense, temperatures could feel like they are well into the triple digits today in New York City and Washington D.C. Are the temperatures over 100 degree, just 100 degree or close to 100 degree? Thank you in advance!!! |

| | Re: well into the triple digits Over 100 degree s (although they are 'triple-digit' [singular] temperatures). Don't be too impressed though. I don't know what temperature scale you use in China, but in the USA they use the Fahrenheit scale (water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit at sea-level {thinks: or is it at some other height? - all I know is that you can't make a decent cup of tea at the top of Everest because the water boils at too low a temperature }

| | Re: well into the triple digits Yes, Bob is right: "triple figures", "triple digits", "three figure numbers" are all ways of saying that the figure is more than 100. As Bob says, 100°F is just under 38°C, so not as hot as it sounds (but hot enough!).
Motor enthusiasts also use this phrase to talk about speed: "I knocked it up into sixth gear and by 4,000 rpm I was [doing] well into triple digits". | | The Following User Says Thank You to hotmetal For This Useful Post:

| | Re: well into the triple digits Thank you very much!
We use Celsiur scale. I'm not quite sure what does 'well into' mean.
' Well into triple-digit temperatures' means the temperature is over 100 degrees, right?

| | Re: well into the triple digits Yes. "Well into" means "considerably over", not "just into".
Just into triple digits would be 100 to (say) 105
Well into triple digits would be 120 to (say) 900
(the numbers could be anything, but you get the idea) | | The Following User Says Thank You to hotmetal For This Useful Post:

| | Re: well into the triple digits Since we are talking about temperatures, "well into the triple digits" could mean 104 or 105 degrees. It doesn't get much hotter than that in New York. (We are, of course, talking about Fahrenheit, not Celsius.)
