Re: ask questions Hi..I would like to know what is the grammatically correct way of saying the sentences below: Where do you usually go on Sundays? CORRECT
OR Where do you usually go to on Sundays?
I would like to go a beach next weekend?
OR I would like to go to a beach next weekend? CORRECT
NOTE: by saying 'a beach' it implies that you have a hell of a lot of beaches to choose from, easily reached that you can up and go to any one of them!
I know in Sydney, (with a dozen beaches stretching from Palm Beach and Newport in the north, south through Manly, further south through Bondi, Bronte, and Coogee, and then continuing even further south) we would say, 'Let's go to the beach', and then discuss which beach. I know - this flies in the face of being specific (the use of 'the') when we actually had not referred to a beach; and had still to decide on which beach!
I think the reason is, we are actually saying, 'let's go surfing/swimming in the sea/ sun-baking on the sand' and all of this is implied when we say, 'Let's go to the beach' (which is the specific place where we can swim in salt water, lie on the sand and sunbake, surf) versus 'Let's go on a picnic.' |
