Default Re: Capitalize Words after Semi-colon?

Hi!

A Chinese forumite told me it is not necessary to capitalize the word after a semi-colon.

But I just found the following example from Cambridge dictionary. It does capitalize the word after a semi-colon. Please read it highlighted in red.

Quote:
skim (CONSIDER QUICKLY)
verb [I or T] -mm-
to read or consider something quickly in order to understand the main points, without studying it in detail:
I've only skimmed (through/over) his letter; I haven't read it carefully yet.
I am wondering whether it is right not to capitalize the word after a semi-colon. In other words, are they both acceptable?

I look forward to your advice. Thanks in advance!

If you mean 'I' and "I've", these are always capitalized.

In brief, what your friend meant was that what comes after a colon or semi-colon is not a new sentence, and so you don't have to capitalize the first word (which is what you do at the start of each new sentence.)

Thank you, David L. I forgot "I" is always capitalized for a moment. I offered a silly example.
