They differ in meaning, at least to me.
Ex: Total sales ... reached 1 million by 1980.
Ex: Total sales ... had reached 1 million by 1980 before ...
Total sales in these countries reached 1 million by 1980.
This sentence comes from COLLINS ENGLISH USAGE. If 'had' was added before 'reached', would the meaning of the sentence change a bit?
