    Default stock vs. share

Chinese stocks extended their losing run to a 10th session yesterday amid continuing worries about inflation and fears over a glut of new shares coming on to the market.

Hello! What is the difference between stock and share? Which one below is correct?

#1 I hold 10 per cent of stock of that company?

#2 I hold 10 per cent of shares of that company?

    Thank you!

    If a person owns 10% shares of a company,his stock is 10%
The capital of a company is divided into small units and these units are shares. If person buys 20% of the shares of this company, his stock of that company is 20%.

    Shares are individual and countable.
    Stock is collective.

I didn't know you owned stock in that company!
Well, I only own 1 share!
Oh yes, I buy shares every chance I can. I have about 200 shares now, and they're do very well on the market.

I own 51% of the stock in that company. I am the majority share holder.

That company's stock tumbled yesterday. Each share is worth only 80% of what it was worth last week.

The two words are generally used interchangeably. But there lies some difference technically.
stocks mean overall ownership in one or more companies (may be by means of buying shares)

shares refer to .... shares of ..... company

    Hi thedaffodils,

We have to be aware of the fact that there is a very interesting shade of meaning.

Common stock in U.S.A., shares in the capital of a company which also give the holder the right to part-ownership of the assets of the company and to a share in the profits. Syn. (Britain) ordinary shares

Ordinary share the largest class of share, the owners of which have to share in the orofits of the company after the preference shares have been paid their dividend but before the deferred share. Ordinary shares may be preferred ordinary shares or deferred ordinary shres. Ordinary shareholders carry most of the risks: if profits are low, they may get a much higher return than do the holders of other classes of capital.

    Regards.
