Default left vs had left and the use of "when"

Hi
1)Sara left when José arrived.
2)Sara had left when José arrived.
They don't have the same meaning. That is:
1)It indecates thet sara left quite at the same time when José arrived.
2)It tells that Sara was the first to leave and after that José arrived.
Is that right!!!
Thanks a lot.
