personal battle
What kind of battle is "a personal battle" in the following?
One should never forget that the Korean War was primarily a very bloody, up-close, and personal battle between Chinese and American troops.
Does this mean "a hand-to-hand fight, or close(tight) battle"?
Thank you.

The phrase is "up close and personal" I have never seen this with a comma after "up close". I would take it to mean that the Korean war was actually largely fought between American and Chinese troops rather than Korean troops.

Re: personal battle
And also that the fighting was vicious and passionate.
