Question What means 'filing by'?

Dear Teacher,
I have read this sentence in the book "Defend Yan'an" translated by Sidney Shapiro:
From a concealed position above the gorge, Dayong and several of his men watched the enemy filing by.
What means 'filing by' here?
Thanks.

"Filing by" means 'passing by, one by one', also called 'in single file'.
A 'file' in this sense, is a line of people.

PS: One says: "What does 'filing by' mean?
