Default Article A in noun phrase ending with uncountable nouns

In the sentence "not a day goes by without a soccer scandal news from Europe..",is the usage of the article "a" correct? The sentence is ending with an uncountable noun and no adjective goes before that noun.I think I am a bit confused..

Thanks in advance.
