Why are put and but spelled differently?

Well, the beginning consonant sounds are different and so are the vowel sounds. Do they sound the same to you?

(The letters p and b are formed in a similar but not identical fashion.)

P.S. Welcome to the forum! :D

If my answer was inadequate, perhaps someone else will come by with a better one.

I agree- they sound different to us and the spelling is logical, although that isn't always the case in English.
