Default Which is the correct way of understanding these two sentences?

Hi,
Please have a look at these 2 sentences:

1/ If I could speak Spanish, I would spend next year studying in Mexico
2/ If I could speak Spanish, I would spend the next year studying in Mexico

=> There are two ways of understanding the sentences. Please tell me which is correct:

First of all, this year is year 2008.

* The first way of understanding the 2 sentences:
1/ If I could speak Spanish, I would spend 2009 studying in Mexico
2/ If I could speak Spanish, I would spend 2010 studying in Mexico

* The second way of understanding the 2 sentences:
1/ I'd spend 12 months FROM NEXT JANUARY in Mexico
2/ I'd spend 12 months FROM NOW in Mexico

(I choose the first way of understanding)
Thank you very much
N.

No,
> If I could speak Spanish, I would spend the next year studying in Mexico
means:
> I'd spend 12 months FROM NOW in Mexico
(generally, and within the context of the choices you've given).

The next <X amount of time> means from now.
"If I was Superman, I'd spend the next 24 hours just flying around". This means I wouldn't wait until tomorrow or the next day.
(or "If I were Superman" if you live somewhere where they insist on the subjunctive form).
