eye strain = asthenopia

Dear teachers,

Recently I got into trouble reading the sentence “Today’s Kickstart will have to be fairly short because my eye strain has flared up again.”

Would you be kind enough tell me whether the expression in bold is interchangeable with the term “asthenopia” = “weakness or fatigue of the eyes, usually accompanied by headache and dimming of vision”?

Hi,
No, it definitely isn't. I was a medical doctor for 20 years, and I still had to look it up (fortunately I wasn't an ophthalmologist!)
Although the definition is right, asthenopia is medical jargon, and unlikely to be understood by most people. You might get away with the terms "myopia" and perhaps "hypermetropia and strabismus" but for now, I'd stick with "eye strain".
