Hi!
Would you ,please, tell me the exact difference between "advise" and "recommend".How can it be explained to the students without causing confusion?
Thanks in advance.
I think 'to recommend' is to go a step further than advise.
To advise is to give suggestions in general. To recommend is to lead to a more specific solution.
For example, when you are sick you friend advice you to seek a doctor. He goes further to recommend a doctor to you, Dr XXX.
not a teacher

Not bad, but try:
When you are sick your friend advises you to see a doctor. He goes further to recommend a doctor to you.

I agree with soup. Basically the meanings of ‘advise’ and ‘recommend’ are the same. However, the role of an advisor is much greater than that of a recommender. One who gives advice must be a knowledgeable person because his advice is a piece of information that will provide additional knowledge/foresight with a positive direction. The advisor to a government or a company definitely posses high caliber of knowledge, wisdom and intelligence. While a recommender can be any body who gives a piece of information about what others think is sound and good Example: The doctor advised him not to take medicine with alcohol. My doctor recommends that I should see a specialist for my disease.
