3rd is charm
Teachers, what does "3rd is charm" mean?
It appears in many movies, sitcoms. I just don't get it.
Thanks

Re: 3rd is charm
If you've tried something twice before and failed, then spirits are reassured with the expression, "Third time lucky", meaning that one will be successful on the third attempt. Possible the number 3 has some mythical 'magic' quality to it.

Re: 3rd is charm
This is a less likely guess, but if the context has something to with nuclear physics it could have something to do with the naming of quarks. The first type is "up", the second is "down", and the third is "charm"...
But don't ask me why. Start further research here: Quark - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thanks to both teachers.
From the context, David's explanation makes more sense.---A guy in a sitcom is a loser in terms of relationships with women, now he is going out on a blind date again, he is extremely nervous and neurotic. His brother tells him:"Relax! Be yourself, what worst can happen if she's not fond of you? remember, Third time is charm."
Bobk's explanation is new knowledge for me, and yes, I checked Encyclopebia. First time I knew Charm could carry other meanings.
Thanks again, David and Bobk
