What is the function of "present" in this sentence?
Hi again,
Could you please explain the part of speech of the word "present" as in the following sentence?
Because I thought it should be "presented".
".....expressing ideas which have been present in children's cognitive understanding for a long time."
Thanks

I can't tell you the part of speech, but I can tell you that "present" in this context means "there" in the same way as someone who was present at a meeting was there.
The ideas are there in children's understanding.
It's not trying to say that the ideas are being presented or "put forward" in their thinking, merely that the ideas are there.
Hope that helps,
Buggles (not a teacher).
