In the name of the Merciful Allah,
Hi, "This handbook also follows up and supersedes the Handbook Of Human Intelligence, published 20 years ago." In this sentence, I ask about follow up. since I have not found it in any dictionary as a whole, I tried to infer the meaning from each one separately in a way that match the context. So, I see follow here means "to come next after something else in sequence, order of time, etc.", and upon as an indication of repeating, as used in this meaning: one after another: used between two occurrences of the same noun to indicate a large amount or number of that noun, for example:
They claimed that the report contained "innuendo upon innuendo."
Am I right?
I would agree with Bhaisahab.
"To follow up" can also mean "to investigate or address the questions raised by". Thus to "follow up a report" means "to investigate the questions raised by a report".
All the best,

I'm so sorry. it is not follow up, it is follow upon, as mentioned later. Again, my quote is: The handbook also follows upon and supersedes the Handbook Of Intelligence, published about 20 years ago. The writer refers that this recent work on intelligence is not the first one for him, he has had another one.![]()
Hello EA,
It's fine (or better) with "upon": "follow upon" restricts the meaning to the one suggested by Bhaisahab, without an awkward echo of the sense of "follow up" which I mentioned.
Best wishes,

Sorry, but the context doesn't suggest the meaning of Bhaisahab. The recent book doesn't continue in the same manner of the earlier one. You can easily see this in the following quote that follows the one above: The present handbook, in addition to being more up-to-date, is considerably more comprehensive. Its 28 chapters (compared with 15 in the 1982 handbook) cover additional topics that, since the 1980s, have blossomed into important areas of study, such as ......., and... Other topics that might have been included in the earlier handbook but were not are also included, such as ........,and.....
1. The handbook also follows upon and supersedes the Handbook Of Intelligence, published about 20 years ago.
I think you could understand it as "follows in the footsteps of the Handbook and takes it further"; just as we follow someone's path, but perhaps go further than they did.

I really appreciate your care after all this time, MrPedantic.
I wish my scrutiny didn't bother you.
