Am wondering if someone can explain what tense were (or was) + past participle would be: as in was gone, were taken, etc.

"was gone" is simple past tense. He was gone when I got there.

In most cases (were)(was) + past participle will be past passive tense.
They were chosen by the teacher.
The bike was stolen.
Few words were spoken.
