    Default about movies

    Hi there,

I'd like to know how to say a few words related to a movie and a movie theater, please.

A movie is "showed" many times during a day. What's the right word for each time it's "showed"? Is it a ''show''? An ''exhibition''? A ''presentation''?
"I'd like to watch Batman but there are ??? only at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m."

If I'd like to ask about the times the movie is being ''showed'' during a day. Should I ask about the ''show times''?

    Thanks.

"I'd like to watch Batman but there are shows/screening only at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m."

If I'd like to ask about the times the movie is being ''showed'' (screened) during a day should I ask about the ''show times''?

    not a teacher

You could ask for the show times, or to be more specific you could ask "What time is Batman showing today?" Even though you're using "time" in the singular sense here, the person at the box office will automatically recite all the show times for the film.

    thanks a lot.
isn't there a noun for each "show" a movie is "showed"? tedtms has suggested "screening" and it sounds pretty good to me. what word would you use as a native, please?

"it's a block buster! it's a must-see movie! there are 2 shows/screenings in the morning, 4 shows/screenings in the afternoon and 3 at night! you have a lot of options! so, there's no excuse for not watching it!"

    thanks.

I'd call it a "session". What time are the afternoon sessions?

In your opinion is it good and common English to say "Would you like to see Batman at the 2 p.m. session?" or "Which session would you like to watch Batman?"?
    Thanks again.

"Would you like to see Batman at the 2 p.m. session?" or
"Which session would you like to watch Batman?"?
Would you like to watch 'Batman' show at 2 p.m.?
Would you like to watch 'Batman' at the 2 p.m. show?

Which session would you like to watch Batman?
Session can be used but it could have a more general meaning, morning/afternoon/night session.

    I would prefer:
Which show of the day would you like to watch Batman?

You can always google to check on the usage of words:

Sure, that's close to what you'd say. Here is a normal conversation:
A: Let's go and see the new Batman movie.
    B: OK, let me see <looks at paper>. There's a session at 4pm.
A: That's a bit early. What about the evening sessions?
    B: 7pm and 9.30pm.
    A: Let's go to the 7 o'clock session.

In AmE, "session" is never used when referring to the screening of a movie, and you would no doubt confuse the person on the other end of the phone with such an inquiry.

"Screening" is about the only noun that would be used in this case, although "show" is more common. "Do you want to see Batman with me tonight?" "Sure, we can have an early dinner and then catch the 6:00 show." Or "What do you want to do tonight?" "How about catching the midnight show at the Bijou theater? They're showing Batman tonight."
