"Japanese rival Toyota Motor Corp., which outsold GM by 277,532 vehicles worldwide in the first six months of this year,..."

    Hi,
I found this word on a today's newspaper and I'd like to know if it is commonly used in North American English, please. Also, could it be replaced by "surpassed" without changing the meaning of the sentence?

outsold mean to surpass sales by X amount.

Mary sold 5 hats; Jill outsold her by 10. Therefore, Jill sold 15 hats.
