Default Letter writing

Is it grammatically correct to put a period after your typed name at the end of the letter? ie. Sincerely,
J. Hendry.

Someone just gave me a rambled on that this was incorrect. This person is not an English major by any means. Thank you for your help.

No period, Jerrod. No mark of any kind.

In addition, a period is used to end a sentence, and since "J. Hendry" is not a sentence, a period is not required.
