vis-à-vis = French >> face to face.
It can mean just that or it can mean in relation to something.
They sat vis-à-vis at the table.
We need to discuss John's behaviour in class vis-à-vis the problems he is having at home.

Re: visa a vi
That's vis-à-vis, a term from the French language, meaning face to face with, opposite to, compared with, or in relation to something. That's its prepositional use.
When used as a noun, it means pretty much the same:
Someone/something that is face to face with or opposite to another.
Other uses include:
-A date or an escort at some event,
-One that has the same characteristics and/or function as another (a counterpart).
