Default four multiple choice questions

Would you please help me with the following multiple choice questions?
1. Overpopulation poses a terrible threat to the human race. Yet it is probably _____ a threat to the human race than environment destruction.
A. no more B. not more C. even more D. much more
(Explanations in the dictionaries got me confused rather than clearer about the difference between "no more than" and "not more than". How do you native speakers differentiate them?)
2. Children who stay away from school do ___ for different reasons.
A. them B. / C. it D. theirs
(I think the correct choice is C, but my reference book insists that the right answer to this question is B (leaving it blank).)
3. ---Why are you staring?
--- I've never seen _____ tree before.
A. kind of B. that kind of C. such kind D. such
(I think the correct option is B, but the same reference book insists on D.)
4. It was _____ we had hoped.
A. more a success than B. a success more than
C. as much of a success as D. a success as much as

Please do me a favour and help me out. This is something urgent.
Thanks.
Richard
