The paragraph I quote is an excerpt from Financial Times.

Q2: What is the difference between 'exacerbate' and 'aggravate'? I have looked them up by Cambridge Dictionaries Online but am not clear.

I think the word 'recreation'(activities for enjoyment) should have been written 're-creation'(create again).

The difference between exacerbate and aggravate is subtle indeed, so much so that the writer was undecided which one to use! One of the words should have been deleted obviously. I would delete aggravate and use exacerbate - exacerbate anxieties. Aggravate is used for problems and conditions(especially medical). I can't pin-point the exact difference though.

Soup, does it "aggravate" refer to "annoy" and "make something worse", while "exacerbate" only means to make something worse?

And if I only want to say intensify the anxiety, can I match 'anxiety' with 'exacerbate', that is 'exacerbate anxiety'? Is it sound odd to a native speaker?
