Question Understanding Verbs and the correct form of the word!

Good Evening can you help me with the question below I am having trouble understanding what this is for and how to write it correctly?
Thank you

Supply the correct form of the verb in parentheses.
Each plant species (to invite)______ much disscussion about origins and meanings, and when talk turns to flowers, the rose is usually the first mentioned.

They want you to choose a form of the verb "to invite", for example invite, invites, invited, inviting,.... Which one would you choose?
