lesser light vs lowliest light

I'd picked up a program at the registration desk and swa she had one of the coveted keynote addresses, scheduled when no one else was speaking. Lesser lights had to compete for attention with other doctor's presentations, while the lowliest made do with a poster about their research displayed with dozens of others in a big hall.

What is the lesser light? dim light? and "the lowliest" here is the lowest light? and is it the dimmest light? I'm quite confused, if the dimmest light = no light, why no light at a poster? then nobody can see the poster then. :roll: so I think I might be wrongly misunderstand this, pls help!!!

Oh, by the way, "she" here is going to give speech on the important subject, nobody knows about it or something, right? I guessed from the coveted keynote address.
