Default Colon, semi-colon, hyphen and dash

What's the difference between a colon, a semi-colon, a hyphen and a dash? Since in our school, grammar must be learned alone ( no teacher should help us ), it's really difficult and i'm going to give my term paper this year .. So can you kindly give me examples .. i really need your help

Hyphen- used to connect words make-up
Dash- used as punctuation- it is used in many ways in British English, like a comma, a semi-colon and a colon. Many people use it because theya ren't sure what to use.
