    when can I use this expression?

    Although time is running out and it seems as though I don't have enough time to complete my task - it's not over until the fat lady sings!

    I agree that it is used most often in the context of a competition, and even more specifically in sports.

    A: Oh, the Red Sox are going to lose this one for sure!
    B: Hey, don't be too sure. There' still one inning left. They could score 11 runs. You know what they say: It ain't over till the fat lady sing.
