Raymott, could you please tell me how to discern which preposition to use pertaining to situations? Should I read Grammer Book for this? Please let me know.
I am sorry if my question sounds silly, but I commit lots of blunders in the usage of prepositions.

Cry for something.
meaning 1) To be upset at the result/consequence of a situation.
I know John has died, but he was in a lot of pain and he is at rest now. Don't cry for him.
meaning 2) To desperately call out for/ask for something.
I heard their cries for help.
Cry of
A cry (loud shout/sound/protest) coming from/associated with something.
I was in the forest last night and I heard the cry of a wolf.
The Tibetan people are protesting. They want the world to hear their cry of injustice.
There are lots of different ways to use the word cry.

No, the question is fine, but there's no easy answer. There are far too many word combinations and few rules. You could look here for a start:

cry for help
She had not had a violent case of laughing for years. She came up once and tried to get out a cry for help to the others standing there, but the laughing gripped her lungs and they thought she was fooling.
