adj "green" in this sentence

Hi teachers~ the sentence below is quoted from "The Old Man and the Sea" And I don't get the meaning of "green"

How old was I whenyou first took me in a boat ?」「Five and you nearlywere killed when I brought the fish in too green and nearly tore the boat into pieces. Can you remember ?」「It is strange ,」the old man said.「He neverwent turtling. That is what kills the eyes. 」

Some think "green" above means "vigorous", but I can't find it in the dictionary. Is it an outdated term?

'Green' can be used to mean young/inexperienced as it has an association for us with new growth, so the fish might be too vigorous because they were brought onto the boat too early and they should have tired them out first.
