I have a problem with the next sentence:

While I am lying on the sofa, my mother is preparing dinner.

Is the use of WHILE correct in combination with a present continuous?

The sentence sounds good to me! I don't see anything wrong with it. Two things are happening at the same time = you're lying on the couch and your mother is cooking.

As a subordinating conjunction 'while' means whereas and is used to show direct opposition,

While: Subordinating Conjunction
EX: Whereas I am lying on the sofa, my mother is preparing dinner.
EX: My mother is preparing dinner,whereas I am lying on the sofa.

As a coordinating conjunction, 'while' and 'as' mean during that time and when used with the continuious/progressive are generally used with the past continuous because the meaning of 'during that time' indicates a past action in progess,

While: Coordinating Conjunction
EX: While I was lying on the sofa, my mother was preparing dinner.
EX: My mother was preparing dinner while I was lying on the sofa.
