most everyone is a criminal?

Dear Teachers,

I'm reading both the English and the Chinese version of The Tenderness of Wolves by Stef Penny. In the English version, there is this sentence:

"I wish I could say that I have never experienced the pleasure (of being behind the bars), but sadly that is not the case. A long time ago, in Illinois. But since most everyone is a criminal down there, I was in some very good company..."

The Chinese version translated the blue part as "almost everyone outside the prison is criminal anyway, so I lived rather nicely inside the prison".

I have doubts about the Chinese translation. Is it what the English version means?

Not quite. The first part of the translation is fine, the second part is incorrect - unless the context indicated that he was actually in prison. As it stands the original says "Everyone in Illinois is basically a criminal, and so am I - therefore I was in good company".
