Smile Can cutie refer to men?

Quote:
cutie, cutey
noun [C] (ALSO cutiepie) MAINLY US INFORMAL
a woman or girl whom you consider attractive or feel affection for:
His daughter is a real cutie.
[as form of address] Hi there, cutie, we were just talking about you.
Hi! According to Cambridge Dictionaries Online, 'cutie' refers to a woman. But I heard Americans addressed a man 'cutie' in the soap TV series. So I think cutie can refer to both men and women. Am I right?

And is there any taboo I should know if I address people with this word?

Thanks!

"Cutie" generally refers to a woman/girl. But women could use it for a guy they consider cute, when they're speaking with their friends (among the girls/women).

Hi, Daffodil!

'Cutie' can be used for describing males and females.

'Cutie' is more appropriately used when describing younger individuals. A five year old boy or girl could be called a 'cutie'. A 35 year old man would be 'handsome' and a 35 year old woman would be 'beautiful'. To be called a 'cutie' when one is an adult may not appear to be very flattering. There is no 'taboo' associated with 'cutie'. Consider the age of the individual when using the word.

Cheers,
Amigo

On the other hand, an 80-year old woman could be a cutie to a 90-year old man.
