Default Articles with names of place

Hello,

why do we write 'Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of the British monarch.' but 'The Buckingham Palace Garden is the largest private garden in London...' as in Buckingham Palace - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What is the reason for not using the article in the first case [palace] and using it in the other [garden]?

Or is it optional?

Can you suggest any online list of geographical places used with/without articles or the summary of rules concerning this? I get quite confused at times about this.

Thanks for your help.

The way articles are used with geographical names can't be explained in terms of logic. This use is called traditional. There is a set of rules for it, but there are a number of exceptions. So it's recommended to consult a dictionary if there is doubt.

How much does it split a native speaker's ears when I use it badly? Can they themselves use it correctly? As you say, theres no logic involved, seemingly.

I think they wouldn't mind it unless it leads to misunderstanding (e.g. Mississippi as a state, and the Mississippi as a river). I believe they use articles, like any other parts of grammar, by instinct, without realising why they are saying so.

Discouraging and stressful for a poor non-native learner, isnt it? and contradicting the saying about pain and gain.

Thanks Clark, anyway.

As someone else has said, there's no rhyme or reason behind the use of articles with many place names. But that doesn't apply in this case, except in that you don't put 'The' before 'Buckingham Palace' when Buckingham Palace is a noun. "The garden" requires its own article, whether it's 'the Buckingham Palace garden" or 'the 23 Railway Cuttings garden'. (Here, 'Buckingham Palace' is used adjectivally.) 'The Buckingham Palace dustbins' are 'the dustbins at Buckingham Palace'.
