Default catching in my throat

Dear Teachers,

I read this from The Tenderness of Wolves by Stef Penney:

"I gasp, the breath catching in my throat like tar."

Does "the breath catching in my throat" mean that the air is blocked and the narrator can't breathe smoothly?

Yes, pretty much. "like tar", so if her breath is sticking like tar to her throat, it's blocked.
