Both mean someone who is learning/studying.
Pupil is more generally used of schools; student is more generally used of colleges and universities.

Here, pupils are usually children, students are adolescents or adults.
Primary school children are called pupils. Grades 8 -12 are students.
"Student" generally implies that they take some responsibility for their own learning, though pupils can do that too, of course.
