type of trust or type of trusts?
I read the following sentence in a book. Is the bold part correct? I feel that ‘trust’ there should be replaced with ‘trusts’. Please explain your answer a little bit.
In the late 1960s, lending trusts were the only were the most popular type of trust.
Thanks,
MG.

Some people may use 'trusts', but I think "trust" is correct because "the most popular type of trust" is singular. The sentence is talking about one type of trust.
There may be many different lending trusts, but they are all the same type of trust.
