Smile a run for our money

Superman: We seem to have one passenger I didn't notice before. Who's this unhappy wanderer.

Hawkwoman: That is Byth. He gave us quite a run for our money that first time.

What does "a run for our money" mean?

It means that he was very good at something and "we" had problems matching him.

I am reading a comic book and I came across again with "run for my money". Take a look at below.

It's almost too easy! I've run out of enemies who can give me any real opposition! I'm too powerful for any foe! I almost wish for an opponent who'd give me a run for my money!

I was wondering if I may say that "run for my money"= challenge.
