Default Read sb sth. = Read sth __ sb.

Read Helen the letter. = Read the letter __ Helen.
The answer is to, but is for also acceptable?

Hello

(for) can be used just when (read) means (to be a student of a certain subject)
e.g.......She is reading for the math exam.

In this case, (read) is the synonym for (study, learn,or take)

My answer is based on TMA dictionary.

Mathilde

If you use "for", the implication is that she is unable for some reason to read the letter for herself.
