How do we distinguish between these two lexical units?

Default Re: keep silent vs. keep silence

Please keep silent >> addressed to a person or a group and requiring those people to be quiet.

Please keep the silence >> do not break the silence with any noise. A general proscription, such as used to be posted in libraries.
