Default hurried for home

Seeing the dark clouds overheads, George hurried for home.

This sentence comes from my textbook. I wonder what is the difference between 'hurried home' and 'hurried for home'. Or is the word 'for' a redundant?

Thank you in advance.

1...'overhead' is correct, not "overheads".
2...no difference, I would just say "hurried home"
