Default "top deck of the number 43"

    Hi there
    I have a question.
I was reading a novel, and there was a boy, he had a pregnant girlfriend.
And he didn't want to be with the girl when she was in labour.
When his mom told him that his girlfirend was going to be in labour.
The boy said to himself "When mum told me I had to run to Alicia's,
I knew that I hadn't missed thw whole thing, and there was still a chance
that the baby would be born on the top deck of the number 43."

I can't figure out what "the top deck of the number 43" means.
    Can someone help me out?
    Thanks a lot.

"The top deck of the number 43." refers to the top deck of a double decker bus, route number 43. So he is saying that maybe the baby would be born on the bus, presumably going to the hospital.
