Default get out on the campaign trail

"Sometimes I think John Kerry develops amnesia when he gets out on the campaign trail," Mr. Cheney said mockingly in front of a booming and loyal crowd at a Republican party rally here.

I understand what is "campaign trail". But what about "get out on"? Is it like "leave the place that he visits"? Thanks. :)

'Get out on the campaign trail' means to begin active campaigning from city to city.
