Question Ummm? Help, please?

"pure delight in contemplation; on the other pure benevolence..."
"It is stronger, as a rule, in very young children than in adults, who are apt to view objects in utilitarian spirit. It plays a large part in our feelings toward human beings, some whom have charm and some the reverse, when considered simply as objects of aesthetic contemplation."

Umm, I don't seem to understand them..Can somebody please rephrase them in speakable/understandalbe English?

Default Re: Ummm? Help, please?

The first sentence lacks context, without which it is hard to make sense of it.

What is "it" in the second sentence?
