Is the following sentence grammatical?

When being heard or played by us, music always reminds us of the time and environment in which it was created.

In my opinion, it should be:

When heard or played by us, music always reminds us of the time and environment in which it was created.

Or

Being heard or played by us, music always reminds us of the time and environment in which it was created.

It would be very nice if you could provide me with some explanations.

"Whether heard or played, music always reminds us of the time and environment in which it was created." sounds a little better to me... Your example was also good, but I personally would not use the word "us" twice within that particular sentence...

But I think the meaning would change if I substitute 'whether' for 'when'.
