Forms of To Be
I was always told that good writers do not use "to be" verbs. So, how can I change "When new data is added to an existing control unit" so that i don't have is added in the sentence?

Firstly, that isn't a sentence; quote the full sentence and someone may be able to help.
Secondly, I find it hard to believe anyone would take using the verb "to be" as a mark of a poor writer.
